Key Takeaways

  • This is a real job, not a sample quote. A home in Vernon Hills, cleaned on Monday, October 19, 2026 by Vasyl from our Northbrook office. About 3 hours on site.
  • The total was $559 for six carpeted areas plus the staircase and both landings, billed as 27 steps, with a CRB (counter-rotating brush) scrub to finish.
  • Stairs are priced per step, not per area. On our price list a step is $4.80, and the landings count toward the step total.
  • The house was mostly empty, so every area was cleaned wall to wall. Empty rooms are the easiest rooms to clean well.
  • The CRB is $50 once per visit, however many rooms it runs over. Here it went over all six areas and the stairs after extraction.
  • Carpet cleaned this way is typically dry in 2 to 4 hours, and the homeowner had the floors back the same day. Visits in the suburbs have a $180 minimum.

Why We Are Publishing Another Real Job

Our first two case studies covered a four-room Chicago condo with hidden pet urine and a jute rug and two pillows in Barrington. Both were smaller visits. This one is the whole-house job: every carpeted room, the stairs and the landings in one visit, with a price built from the published list.

So here is the visit from the walk-through to the last pass: how the areas and steps were counted, what the base price includes, why the technician finished with a brush machine, and what each line costs on our price list. The homeowner's details stay private. The carpet, the photos and the numbers are exactly as they were.

If you are comparing quotes for professional carpet cleaning in Lake County, use this as a reference point. A whole-house quote should show you three things: how the rooms were counted, how the stairs were counted, and what is included before any add-on. This one does.

Step 1: The Walk-Through

Before: an empty corner room, with the traffic marks and dull patches showing on the light carpet.

Every visit starts with a walk-through before any hose comes in. The technician confirms the areas on the quote, measures anything that looks bigger than it was described, and looks at the spots the homeowner points out. Nobody finds out about a change from the invoice.

This walk-through was simple, because the house was empty of furniture in most areas. Six carpeted areas, a staircase with two landings, and light loop and cut-pile carpet throughout. An "area" on our list is up to 300 sq ft, which covers a typical bedroom or living room, and these rooms fit. The stairs are counted separately: every step and the landings go on the step line.

What the technician found was ordinary wear from everyday use: the traffic lanes and the stair treads had the dull, flattened look that comes from being walked the same way every day. A lane like that is two things at once. The pile is crushed, so it reflects light differently from the pile around it, and dry soil has been ground into the base of the fibers where a vacuum no longer reaches. Cleaning takes care of the soil. Standing the crushed pile back up takes a second step, which is where the brush machine comes in below.

Step 2: Vacuum, Pre-Treat, Extract

The base carpet price covers the same steps in every area, following the IICRC S100 standard for cleaning textile floor coverings:

  1. Vacuuming. Dry soil comes out far more easily dry than as mud, so every area is vacuumed first.
  2. Light furniture moving. Small items get lifted or moved; anything heavy or fragile stays put. In a mostly empty house there was little to move, which is part of why six rooms took about 3 hours.
  3. Pre-treatment. Traffic lanes and soiled areas are pre-sprayed and given time to work before extraction.
  4. Hot water extraction. Hot water is rinsed into the pile from the truck-mounted unit and pulled straight back out, taking the loosened soil and the pre-spray with it.

One of the looped-carpet areas, with the hose from the truck run across it. The carpet stops at the black and white tile, and the stairs come down onto it at the back.

The truck-mounted unit is the reason the hose is in the photo: the heat, the pressure and the vacuum all come from the truck outside, so the only thing in the house is the hose and the wand. It is also why a job two or more floors up with no elevator costs $40 more on our list, for the portable machine that has to come in instead. This was a house, so that did not apply.

Step 3: The Stairs, Tread by Tread

The staircase, with the vacuum parked at the top. Stairs are billed by the step, and each tread is cleaned on its own with the wand.

Stairs are the part of a whole-house quote that companies price in the most different ways, so here is exactly how ours works. We do not price a staircase as an area. We count the steps, add the landings to the count, and charge $4.80 per step. This home was billed at 27 steps for the staircase and both landings.

Each tread is cleaned individually with the hot water extraction wand, because a stair tread is the hardest-worked carpet in the house: every foot lands in the same place on the nose of the step, and the pile there packs down faster than anywhere on a floor.

Step 4: The CRB Finish

With every area and the stairs extracted, the technician finished with a CRB: a counter-rotating brush machine with two cylindrical brushes spinning in opposite directions, so the pile is worked from both sides. Run over a cleaned carpet it does two things. It lifts the soil that has worked down to the base of the yarn, where suction alone struggles to reach, and it stands flattened fibers back up. That matters most in the traffic lanes and on the landings, where foot pressure packs the yarn down, and it is why the technician ran it here after extraction in all six areas and on the stairs.

On our price list the CRB upgrade is $50 per visit, charged once however many rooms it covers. Is it worth it? On a flat, lightly used carpet, usually not, and we will say so on the walk-through. On carpet with established lanes and packed stair treads it is often the difference between a carpet that looks cleaner and a carpet that looks like one color again. If you are reading quotes from other companies, ask whether any agitation is included or how it is charged; a wand-only pass over an old lane often does not get it out.

A close-up of the looped pile with a mark pressed into it. A mark like this is crushed yarn, not soil; cleaning and the brush pass lift the pile.

The Result

The photo at the top of this post is the same corner room as the before photo, taken after cleaning: the pile is standing up in even wand passes and the dull patches are gone. Those passes disappear the first time someone walks across the room.

Carpet cleaned this way is typically dry in 2 to 4 hours with air movers, up to 6 hours for heavy soil. Because the rooms and the stairs were cleaned in one visit, the whole carpeted footprint dried on the same schedule, and the homeowner had the floors back the same day. Keep air moving while it dries, walk on it in socks rather than shoes, and wait until it is dry to the touch before anything heavy goes back on it.

What $559 Covered

What was on the ticket Published rate List total

Total for the visitList total $559.60Invoiced $559

Add the list rates up and you get $559.60: $380 for six areas, $129.60 for 27 steps and $50 for the CRB. The ticket came to $559, sixty cents under the list total, and every line on it is one you can check against the published list. Three things worth knowing when you read it:

  • More rooms bring the per-room price down. Six areas at $380 works out to about $63 each, against $100 for a single area, because the drive, the parking and the truck-mounted setup are paid for once. It is the same reason every suburban visit has a $180 minimum.
  • What would have cost extra and did not: stain treatment, deodorizer and carpet protector are $15 per area, filtration lines along the baseboards are $20 per area, and the portable unit for a job two or more floors up without an elevator is $40. None of these were part of this job.

The full list, with worked examples, is on our pricing page, and our Chicago carpet cleaning cost guide walks through a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom and a three-bedroom house with stairs. For a number for your own home before you call, the price calculator builds the same estimate from your rooms, stairs and add-ons.

What We Would Tell Any Vernon Hills Homeowner

Whole-house jobs often come up around a move, and most of the advice is free.

  • If you can, book while the rooms are empty. Moving in, moving out, or between tenants is the best time to clean carpet: nothing to move, every square foot gets the wand, and the lanes come out best when the technician can run wall to wall. Our move-out carpet cleaning page covers the flat per-area pricing and the emailed invoice.
  • Count your steps before you call. Steps plus landings, times $4.80, is the stairs line. If a quote prices your staircase as an "area" or a flat fee, ask how many steps that covers.
  • Vacuum the stairs with the attachment, not the upright. Grit collects at the nose of each tread, where every foot lands, and an upright rarely reaches it. A slow pass with the hose and brush once a week keeps the treads from packing down.
  • Vacuum the lanes slowly, in two directions. Most of what is in a lane is dry, gritty soil, and grit cuts fibers every time someone steps on it. The second direction catches what the first pushed over.
  • Clean before the lane sets. Soil left in crushed pile starts to abrade the fiber itself, and at that point part of the shading is permanent wear. A cleaning every 6 to 12 months in hallways, stairs and family rooms (12 to 18 in low-traffic bedrooms) keeps the lanes at the stage where they come out.

When You Do Not Need Us

We would rather you not spend $180 you do not need to. Skip the service call if:

  • The only marks are furniture dents. A dent is crushed yarn, not dirt. Vacuum over it slowly and give it a few days; cut pile usually relaxes most of the way on its own, loop pile less so, and the next cleaning with the brush pass lifts most of what is left.
  • You have one lightly used room and nothing else. A single area is billed at the $180 minimum, so it is better value to wait and add it to a visit that covers the hallway, the stairs or a second room.
  • The lane is wear, not soil. Press a clean white cloth, dampened with plain water, into the lane and lift it. If the cloth stays clean and the fibers in the lane look frayed or shorter than the pile beside them, cleaning will not change the color, and we will tell you that on the phone.

And if you do need us, you now know what a whole house with stairs costs, how every line on the ticket is counted, and that the ticket is built from the published list.

FAQ: Carpet Cleaning Costs in Vernon Hills

How much does carpet cleaning cost in Vernon Hills?

At My Carpet Cleaning, suburban visits have a $180 minimum, and carpet is $100 for one area (up to 300 sq ft), $180 for two areas and $50 for each additional area, with vacuuming, light furniture moving, pre-treatment and hot water extraction included. Stairs are $4.80 per step. Add-ons are priced per area: stain treatment, deodorizer or protector $15, filtration lines $20, and a CRB scrub $50 per visit. The Vernon Hills job in this case study was $559 for six areas, 27 steps and the CRB.

How are carpeted stairs priced and cleaned?

Stairs are counted by the step rather than by area, at $4.80 per step, and landings are added to the count. This home was billed at 27 steps for the staircase and both landings, and each tread was cleaned individually with the hot water extraction wand.

What does a CRB scrub add to a carpet cleaning?

A counter-rotating brush agitates the pile and lifts soil that has worked down to the base of the yarn, where suction alone struggles to reach. It also stands flattened fibers back up, which is why it was run here after extraction in all six areas and on the stairs. It is $50 per visit on our price list, charged once however many rooms it covers.

Can six rooms and the stairs be cleaned in a single visit?

Yes. This Vernon Hills home had six carpeted areas plus the staircase and landings done in about 3 hours on site, and the whole carpeted footprint dried on the same schedule. We also serve nearby Libertyville, Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove from our Northbrook office.

How long does carpet take to dry after professional cleaning?

Typically 2 to 4 hours with hot water extraction and air movers, up to 6 hours for heavy soil. Keep air moving with the heat, air conditioning or a ceiling fan, walk on the carpet in socks rather than shoes, and wait until it is dry to the touch before setting furniture back on it.
